10 ways to guarantee you get that second date

1. Turn up on time. None of this casual lateness guff makes any sense. Set the tone for how a relationship will be and respect your date enough to actually arrive at the agreed time.

2. Be complimentary. Being told you look great is a wonderful feeling and given that both parties will be worried about their appearance on this night, you’ll be doing everyone a favour by giving each other a little confidence boost.

3.Have plans. It doesn’t matter who takes charge, but the last thing you want is to be standing on street corners, dressed to the nines, with nowhere to go and having that ‘I don’t mind where we go, really’ back and forth. Excruciating.

4. Drink in moderation before the date. A bit of dutch courage might be necessary but don’t go out bladdered. No matter how carefree you now feel, your date will notice you are p*ssed. And sober people don’t like going to dinner with someone sloshed.3. A good idea might be to steer clear of the mundane questions like ‘how many brothers and sisters do you have?’ and focus on what you think your date might be interested in talking about.

6. Listen. Dates aren’t about taking turns asking and answering questions. Let the natural flow of the conversation carry you.

7. Laugh. Banter is great but find the humour in the situations and the anecdotes rather than trying to force the funnies. Although, wait til you hear my knock knock joke…

8. Don’t have an agenda. Having a milestone that you want to hit at the end of the night puts pressure on everyone. If you don’t get that end of night kiss you secretly thought was a must or you don’t even get a follow on Twitter, it isn’t the end of the world. Again, let the date itself dictate the pace.7. 9. Break the date boundaries. A first date doesn’t have to be all sitting formally eating a three course meal. You need to be yourselves so if you enjoy going paint balling, catching a film, going for a walk or having a dance, then why not? Who’s to say what a first date has to involve? Obviously ensure that your date is cool with these plans though.

10. Don’t lie. This never works out if you want things to go anywhere. Unless you just want a booty call (this advice list isn’t really for you) then the whole point of a date is to find someone who you will be spending a lot of time with. Be honest from the start. If you haven’t read the book she’s talking about, don’t pretend you have. Don’t say you’re team Miliband if you’re a UKIP voter. Webs of lies always fall apart.
