Gen Buhari aims to probe missing NNPC $20 billion

President elect, Muhammadu Buhari, has said the incoming administration will investigate the 20 billion dollars allegedly missing from coffers of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

Mallam Sanusi had last year accused the NNPC of not accounting for $49.8billion oil money. He later reviewed the sum to $20 billion after a reconciliation of the figure by the NNPC, the Federal Ministry of Finance and other government agencies.

The NNPC claimed the money was used for subsidy payment for kerosene and pipeline maintenance.

Speaking, when he received Adamawa delegation that paid him a congratulatory visit in Abuja yesterday, Buhari said the money in question is too big for the incoming administration to ignore, even though it has promised to draw a line.

“His royal highness, the Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, has already written all the detailed report on it, the incoming government will not ignore it, even though we have promised to draw a line, but $20 billion is too big to ignore. This is Nigerian money and it must be investigated.

“I heard that some people have started refunding money, but I will not believe until I see it, the emir was removed from the Central bank because he said that about $20 billion was missing, instead of the government to investigate the matter, they refused, instead they sacked him. As God will have it, he is now the Emir of Kano and that is exactly what he what’s to be,” he said.

On the issue of Boko Haram, ravaging the northeast region, Buhari said his administration would do all it could to end terrorism in the country. “We thank God that our people have now realized that it is not about religion, it is about terrorism which has no bases in both Islam and Christianity. Non of these two religions encourages injustice. So for Boko Haram to go and kill people in Mosque, Churches, markets, bus stations or slaughter children in schools while they were asleep, and shouted Allahu Akbar, whoever did that does not know the meaning of what he is saying or does not believe in it. We hope when we resume, we pray to God to help us end terrorism in Nigeria.”

He blasted the ruling PDP for not doing enough to better the lives of Nigerians, “For the last 16 years the PDP government has done virtually nothing in your state, thank God it is not my party that has subjected you to these hardship, it is not the defunct ANPP, CPC or APC, so I urge you to wait for the next four years and see how we would start our own government.

“One of the damages that the PDP government has done to this nation was the destruction of our armed forces. Before now, our military had an impressive track record of excellence everywhere they go for an assignment. I could recall when I was in the military, my first posting was to Kinsasha and we did extremely well. Our military has done a lot in Liberia, Sierra Leone, and today the PDP government is telling us that the same army could not secure 14 out of 774 local governments. I still find it difficult to reconcile this. If we resume office, we would find out why.” he said.

Buhari promised to tackle insecurity, unemployment, and corruption. “We have already built a road map on what we intend to do if we resume office. We will concentrate on the issue of security, youth unemployment and fighting corruption. These are three things that I promise to give priority on”, he said.

Earlier, Adamawa governor-elect, Sen. Bindow Jibril said the delegation was in Abuja to congratulate the President-elect on his victory in the March 28 poll, and reassure him that Adamawa and the north east would support him, and to also plead with him on some pressing problems that are of importance to the north east, especially Adamawa state.
